Analyst Says UnitedHealthcare Dropped About 13% of Its Medicare Advantage Plans Across 18 States

UnitedHealthcare has dropped about 13% of the Medicare Advantage plans it offered across 18 states for 2027, according to analyst data reported by Axios. The change does not mean 13% of all members will lose coverage, but it is a clear warning that many seniors need to read their 2027 plan notices rather than assume this year’s benefits will carry forward unchanged.

The 13% Figure Refers to Plans, Not Members

The figure comes from an analyst review cited by Axios and describes the share of plans removed across 18 states. It is not a national estimate that 13% of UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members are being terminated.

That distinction matters because Medicare Advantage is organized by county and plan. A carrier can eliminate a plan, exit a county or redesign benefits without affecting every customer in the same way.

UnitedHealth Has Already Been Shrinking Medicare Advantage Enrollment

UnitedHealth Group told investors that Medicare Advantage membership fell by about 785,000 people from June 2025 to June 2026. In its SEC filing, the company said funding pressures had led to pricing and benefit actions, market exits and continued membership contraction.

The company also warned that future responses to Medicare funding pressure can include changing provider networks, adjusting member benefits and increasing premiums or cost sharing.

The Letter in the Mail Matters More Than the National Number

Medicare Advantage members receive an Annual Notice of Change explaining what will be different for the next plan year. That document can show changes to premiums, copays, drug coverage, dental or vision benefits and provider networks.

A national headline cannot tell a member whether a specific doctor remains in-network or whether a local plan is ending. The plan notice can.

Open Enrollment Is the Decision Window

Medicare’s annual enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027. That gives members a defined window to compare alternatives once local plan details are final.

For UnitedHealthcare members, the important question is now local: did the specific plan survive, and if it did, what changed inside it?
