Diddy Sued for $100 Million. The Lawyer He Blames Could Not Get It Dismissed

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is seeking $100 million over statements he says were false and defamatory. One of the defendants tried to end the case before trial, but a federal judge denied attorney Ariel Mitchell’s motion to dismiss in full, leaving Combs’ claims against her alive and setting the case for another court conference.

The Case Started at $50 Million

Combs sued Courtney Burgess, Mitchell and Nexstar Media in January 2025, initially seeking $50 million. USA Today reported that an amended complaint later sought another $50 million, bringing the requested damages to $100 million.

The lawsuit centers on statements Burgess and Mitchell made about alleged recordings and other accusations involving Combs. Combs denies the claims and alleges the defendants damaged his reputation by spreading false statements.

The Judge Did Not Decide Who Is Telling the Truth

U.S. District Judge John P. Cronan’s Sept. 4 order did not rule that Combs’ allegations are true. It decided whether the claims were legally sufficient to keep moving at this stage.

Cronan denied Mitchell’s motion to dismiss in its entirety. Nexstar’s separate motion was granted in part and denied in part, meaning the case continues but not every claim survived in the same form.

Why the Ruling Matters

A dismissal would have ended Combs’ claims against Mitchell before discovery and trial. Instead, the ruling keeps open a case in which Combs is asking for a nine-figure award and challenging statements made during one of the most damaging periods of his public life.

That makes the next phase less about a headline victory and more about evidence. The parties will have to continue litigating what was said, what support existed for those statements and whether Combs can prove legally actionable harm.

The Next Court Date Is Already Set

Cronan ordered the parties to appear for a conference on Sept. 17 to discuss next steps, including discovery and possible settlement procedures.

For now, the $100 million figure remains a demand, not an award. What changed is that a major effort to stop the case failed, keeping the dispute alive.
