Google Sues Alleged AI Scam Network Tied to Millions of Android Texts

Updated Jul 2, 2026
Google is suing to dismantle what it describes as a sprawling AI-powered phishing operation that sent millions of scam text messages to Android users and allegedly stole financial data from hundreds of thousands of victims.
What You Should Know
The lawsuit, filed June 12, targets a group Google calls “Outsider Enterprise,” which it says used AI tools, including Google’s own Gemini, to mass-produce fake websites impersonating banks, telecom companies, and government agencies, according to TechCrunch. Google says the group sent 2.5 million scam texts to Android users in a two-week span in May, generating more than 55,000 user-flagged spam complaints in that window alone.
The Money Trail
Court filings describe a software suite called Outsider, sold for $88 a week or $200 a month, that let cybercriminals with little technical skill build convincing fake websites in minutes using more than 290 templates, TechCrunch reported. The complaint alleges the network has stolen at least 36,000 payment cards from victims across 95 countries, with the FBI separately estimating the broader phishing platform has enabled theft of roughly 3.87 million stolen credit cards and $1.9 billion in losses since 2023.
The Receipts
Google’s complaint accuses the network of impersonating its brands, infringing its trademarks, and engaging in racketeering and wire fraud, according to TechCrunch’s review of the filing. An FBI spokesperson confirmed the bureau coordinated with Google and Lumen’s Black Lotus Labs to seize domains and Shopify storefronts tied to the operation’s testing infrastructure.
What Happens Next
Google is seeking compensatory and punitive damages along with a court order to shut down the network’s remaining infrastructure. The company says it is continuing to work with major carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, to block scam texts as the case proceeds.
