Humana Is Dropping About 600,000 Medicare Advantage Members for 2027
Alex Mercer
Updated Aug 26, 2026
Humana expects about 600,000 of its Medicare Advantage members to be affected when it exits plans and markets for 2027.
The company disclosed the figure alongside its second-quarter results, describing the move as “targeted plan exits” and saying it would prioritize higher performing plans, including those with greater value-based care penetration.
What the Company Said
Chief Financial Officer Celeste Mellet was direct about the intent: “we will work to recapture a significant portion of that volume as we did in 2025.”
That is the company’s plan for the members, not a promise to them. Anyone whose plan is discontinued has to choose something else, whether or not they end up back with Humana.
The Part That Costs People Money
A discontinued Medicare Advantage plan is not the same as a doctor leaving a network. The doctor can stay exactly where they are and the plan can still disappear.
What matters is what happens if the letter arrives and nothing is done with it. A member who takes no action by the close of open enrollment reverts to Original Medicare, which does not include prescription drug coverage. Getting that coverage back means separately enrolling in a Part D plan.
So the default outcome of ignoring the notice is worse than the plan that was lost.
Whether Other Insurers Follow
UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and CVS Health all exited hundreds of counties for 2026. None of them has confirmed exits for 2027, though further consolidation is widely expected given cost pressure across the industry.
For now the confirmed number belongs to Humana.
The Dates That Matter
Open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, and coverage changes take effect January 1.
Plan-level detail, including which counties and service areas are affected, becomes clear when CMS publishes its landscape files in the fall. Until then the instruction is narrow: if a non-renewal notice arrives, it is not informational. It is a deadline.
