Irene Cara's Estate Found $333,353 in Royalties She Never Collected

Irene Cara’s estate says it uncovered $333,353 in music royalties that the singer had earned but never collected before her death. The discovery is now part of a court filing that also addresses compensation for the business manager who recovered the money and is working on Cara’s music rights.

The Money Was Spread Across Three Companies

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the estate’s business manager located $246,000 held by Chappell Music, another $78,000 with Phonographic Performance Limited and about $8,000 at Unidisc Musique. The filing says the funds have since been collected for the estate.

The amounts add up to $333,353, turning what might have looked like routine royalty administration into a six-figure estate issue. Cara died in 2022 at age 63, leaving behind music closely associated with the films “Fame” and “Flashdance.”

The Estate Is Also Asking About the Manager’s Share

The filing says the business manager had a verbal agreement with Cara for a 15% fee and is asking the court to recognize that arrangement. Fifteen percent of the newly recovered royalties would itself represent a substantial payment from the estate.

The manager’s work is not limited to collecting old balances. According to the filing, the manager is also reviewing potential royalty offers, negotiating future uses of Cara’s music and looking for a buyer for her music rights.

The Next Value Question Is Bigger Than the Back Royalties

The recovered money is now identifiable, but the longer-term value of Cara’s catalog remains unsettled. A future sale or licensing agreement could make the rights themselves more significant than the royalties that triggered the latest filing.

For now, the court record has put a precise number on money Cara earned but never received and opened a new chapter in how her estate may handle the music that continues to generate value.
