Medicare Advantage Average Premium Is Projected to Fall 16.5% in 2027
Daniel Reeves
Updated Oct 7, 2026
The weighted average monthly premium across Medicare Advantage plans is projected to fall from $14.37 in 2026 to $12 in 2027, a 16.5% decline, according to CMS. That national average is useful context, but it does not mean every beneficiary’s plan will become cheaper.
Premiums and plan availability vary by state and insurer, and some members will still face higher costs or need to choose a different plan. The new figures arrive just before Medicare Open Enrollment begins Oct. 15.
The $12 Figure Is a National Weighted Average
CMS combines premiums across Medicare Advantage plan types to produce the national estimate. A beneficiary’s actual premium can be above or below that amount depending on the plan, county and benefits selected.
Some States and Individual Plans Will Move in the Opposite Direction
Independent analysis of the CMS data shows premium increases in a number of states even as the national weighted average falls. That is why the annual plan notice remains more important to an individual member than the headline national percentage.
Open Enrollment Is the Point When the Number Becomes Actionable
Medicare Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Members can compare 2027 premiums, networks, drug coverage and out-of-pocket limits rather than assuming their current plan reflects the national trend.
The Right Comparison Is 2027 Plan Cost Versus Current Coverage
For beneficiaries, the national decline is a signal to review options, not a promise of savings. The practical question is whether the plan available in their ZIP code is cheaper, more expensive or materially different for 2027.
