Miley Cyrus is entering her next album era with one less name. The singer is promoting her upcoming album Bass Persuades as simply “Miley,” and Billy Ray Cyrus says he supports the move.

Her father’s public response points away from a family-rift interpretation. He did not say he ordered her to drop “Cyrus.” He said he told her he felt good about her using only her first name.

What Billy Ray Cyrus Actually Said

Billy Ray wrote that he had always called his daughter “Miley. Just … Miley.” He said he told her that going with her first name felt right and compared the idea with artists who became instantly recognizable by one name.

He mentioned Dolly, Cher, Elvis and Prince, then called the change a “natural progression” for his daughter. He also said he was looking forward to the new album.

The tone was supportive rather than defensive. That matters because a famous child dropping a family surname can invite speculation about a personal split even when the public statements point in the opposite direction.

This Is a Professional Rebrand, Not a Reported Legal Name Change

Miley was born Destiny Hope Cyrus and legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus in 2008. The current reporting describes a change in how she is presenting and crediting herself professionally ahead of the new album.

There has been no reported new legal filing changing Miley Ray Cyrus to a one-word legal name. The confirmed development is the artist branding: “Miley” is now the name being used for the Bass Persuades era.

Why the Timing Makes Sense

Bass Persuades is scheduled for release Sept. 18. The name change arrived as promotion for the album was beginning, which makes it part of a broader career rollout rather than an isolated announcement.

A one-name identity also works differently for an artist who has been famous since childhood. Miley already has the kind of first-name recognition that lets the single name remain immediately identifiable to fans and media audiences.

What Has and Has Not Changed

The public-facing artist name has changed. The reporting does not show a new legal name change, and Billy Ray’s reaction does not suggest a dispute over the decision.
