Nate Silver's New Model Makes Democrats Favorites to Flip the Senate

Democrats are now narrow favorites to win control of the U.S. Senate, according to a new forecast from Nate Silver’s model, which puts their odds at 57.3 percent. Prediction markets are less sure, setting up a rare gap between the forecast and the bettors.

What the Model Says

Silver’s model, released Aug. 12, gives Democrats a 57.3 percent chance of taking the Senate and an 87 percent chance of winning the House. Those are probabilities, not predictions; a 57 percent favorite still loses more than four times in ten. The figures reflect the model’s read of current polling, seat-by-seat ratings and historical patterns.

Where the Markets Diverge

Prediction markets tell a slightly different story in the Senate. On Polymarket, traders put Democrats’ odds of Senate control at about 53 percent, several points below Silver’s model. On the House, the two roughly agree: the market sits around 88 percent to the model’s 87. The disagreement is concentrated in the chamber that is hardest to flip and closest to a coin toss.

Why a Few Points Matter

Control of the Senate shapes what a president can do in the second half of a term, from confirming judges and appointees to advancing or blocking legislation. A shift from a narrow Republican hold to a narrow Democratic one would change that math, which is why a forecast moving past 50 percent draws attention this far from Election Day.

The Caveat Built Into the Number

Both the model and the markets will move as new polls, candidates and events land between now and November. A 57 percent forecast is an edge, not a verdict, and the gap with the betting markets is itself a signal that the Senate remains genuinely uncertain. The next updates, not this one, will show whether the Democratic edge holds.
