Cate Blanchett stood before the 2026 Logie Awards on Sunday and spoke about a friend the room had lost. “I loved him very much,” she said of Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor honored posthumously weeks after his death at 78.
A Tribute Built on His Own Words
Blanchett described Neill as “universally loved” and returned to the outlook he was known for among colleagues. “I know it’s easy to spiral down and think what’s the worst thing that could happen,” she recalled him saying, “but I encourage you to spiral up and think what’s the best thing that can happen. Look up, it’s blue.” The In Memoriam segment closed with performers singing Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” which had been Neill’s favorite song.
The Illness He Had Just Beaten
Neill’s death carried a painful sequence. He was diagnosed in 2023 with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and had spoken openly about the treatment that followed. In April 2026, after CAR-T therapy, he was declared cancer-free. He died months later of pneumonia in Sydney, according to his agent.
The Career the Tribute Was For
To a global audience Neill was paleontologist Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park,” but his five decades of work stretched well beyond it, from “The Piano” to the New Zealand comedy “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” Born Nigel and renamed Sam at school, he built a second life away from film as the owner of Two Paddocks winery in Central Otago, New Zealand.
What He Left Behind
Neill was survived by four children and eight grandchildren, and his family planned a private memorial at his New Zealand farm. The Logies honor placed his name before the television audiences of two countries that had claimed him for half a century. The tribute did not dwell on the illness. It ended, by his own reminder, on the instruction to look up.
