What Is Waiting for Whoever Takes the Job

A Senate-passed stopgap funding measure still needs to pass the House. The president is pushing to eliminate the Senate filibuster. The SAVE America Act, a voter identification and elections overhaul, is on the calendar. All of it lands in a compressed pre-midterm session in September, with the election roughly two months out.

G. William Hoagland, a former Senate majority leader aide, put the problem plainly: whoever replaces Braid “will have to hit the ground running fast.”

He Is Not Going Alone

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt is departing this month. Deputy chief of staff James Blair has taken a leave of absence to concentrate on the midterms.

That is three senior departures inside a single month, with the legislative agenda unchanged.

The Explanation Being Offered

One Republican with White House ties framed the timing as a rational read of the calendar rather than a signal of anything: “Congress isn’t going to do anything from now until November. This gives you runway in the private sector.”

That logic is straightforward if the assumption holds. It also concedes that the administration expects its own legislative agenda to go nowhere for the rest of the year.

Why It Reaches Past Washington

Legislative affairs is not a public-facing job, which is why the departure will get less attention than the press secretary’s. It is also the job that determines whether a funding bill passes.

The stopgap measure sitting in the House is the piece that touches people directly. Government funding lapses affect benefit processing, federal offices and services that older Americans use, and the office responsible for getting that bill moved is currently between directors.
