American Airlines Just Made It Harder to Get a Cash Refund. Book Within 7 Days of Your Flight and Your Money Is Gone.
James Hartley
Updated Aug 5, 2026
American Airlines quietly updated its Customer Service Plan on July 29, 2026, narrowing the window in which passengers can get a cash refund after booking. Under the previous policy, travelers could book a flight as little as two days before departure and still cancel within 24 hours for a full refund. That option no longer exists.
What the Policy Now Says
The updated policy limits 24-hour cash refunds to passengers who purchased their ticket at least seven days before departure. Book a flight six days out, cancel an hour later - the cash refund is gone. What replaces it, for certain fare classes, is a travel credit. For basic economy, not even that.
The change reverts American to the minimum standard required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which has required 24-hour refundability only for tickets purchased at least seven days before departure since 2012. American had voluntarily offered greater flexibility since the pandemic. That voluntary standard is now gone.
The practical gap is significant. A traveler who books a last-minute flight inside seven days and then needs to cancel - for any reason - will receive a travel credit only, if they receive anything at all.
Who This Hits Most
Last-minute travelers book inside seven days routinely - family emergencies, business changes, weather watching, or deals found close in. These passengers had a meaningful backstop under the old policy. They do not under the new one.
Basic economy passengers have no credit recourse at all under certain circumstances. Passengers who book through third-party sites rather than directly through American may face additional restrictions depending on the platform’s own policies. The DOT’s 24-hour protection applies only to purchases made directly through the airline.
What to Do Before You Book
Check the fare class before purchasing. Flexible or main cabin fares preserve some cancellation options after the 24-hour window closes. If you are booking within seven days and need the ability to cancel, verify whether a refundable fare is available. Book directly through American’s own website or reservation line to ensure DOT protections apply.
