Medicare Advantage Plan Exits Affect Millions Ahead of 2027

At least 3.8 million Medicare Advantage enrollees are affected by insurers discontinuing or withdrawing plans for 2027, according to MarketWatch reporting. A plan exit does not end Medicare eligibility, and not every affected person must actively pick a new plan. Their next coverage arrangement depends on the insurer, the type of plan change and the notice they receive.

A change affecting existing members

Medicare Advantage is offered by private insurers as an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. Some affected members may be automatically moved into another plan from the same insurer. Others who want to remain in Medicare Advantage may need to choose a replacement; people who do not select another Medicare Advantage plan may move into traditional Medicare under the applicable rules. The member notice is the starting point for understanding which outcome applies.

Fewer choices in many areas

KFF found an average of 35 Medicare Advantage options available for general enrollment in 2027, down from 39 in 2026. Among plans that include prescription drug coverage, the corresponding average fell from 32 to 28. Those figures exclude employer-group and special needs plans, and local availability varies substantially by county and insurer.

What a replacement decision involves

Members whose coverage is changing should compare the 2027 options actually available to them. A familiar insurer name does not ensure that a doctor network, medication formulary, copayment or out-of-pocket limit will stay the same. Anyone considering a move to traditional Medicare should also understand how drug coverage and supplemental coverage would work in their circumstances.

The dates are close

Annual Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7, with most selected changes taking effect January 1, 2027. Members who receive a plan-termination or transition notice should read the specific instructions rather than assume they have lost Medicare or must complete the same action as every other affected enrollee.
