Two Men Rode a Couch Down a Busy Road. Then Police Stopped Them.

Two men took a couch onto a busy Charlotte street, balancing the loveseat across two electric scooters before police stopped them. The department then shared the unusual ride online, turning a piece of living room furniture into a warning about road safety.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police described the stop in an Oct. 1 social media post. The photograph showed how the men had combined the couch and scooters, but the department did not disclose whether either rider received a ticket.

The couch had two sets of wheels

The men were traveling along South Tryon Street. WFAE reported that a department spokesperson dated the incident to Friday, Sept. 25; the public post followed several days later.

WBTV identified the scooters as electric Lime scooters. With the small couch straddling them, the setup put an ordinary household seat into the same roadway as cars. Police acknowledged the creativity, while asking people to consider safety before trying an unusual ride.

The photograph became the joke

WBTV reported that social media commenters responded with jokes about the improvised vehicle. Some praised its ingenuity, while others wanted to see video of it moving. The department’s shared image documented the arrangement; the reporting did not establish that footage of the ride had been released.

Police left the penalty question open

The police warning focused on whether a contraption belongs on a road with cars and whether its unusual appearance could distract other drivers. WFAE also reported the department’s suggestion that mobile furniture displays were better left to IKEA.

That was the confirmed official response: a stop, a photograph and a safety reminder. Neither WBTV nor WFAE established whether the riders received citations. The couch’s trip became a public lesson, but its ticket status remains unanswered.
