Planning a Trip to Europe? Five Cities Now Charge Entry Fees or Tourism Taxes That Were Not There Two Years Ago.

Several of Europe’s most visited cities have introduced or significantly raised taxes on tourists in 2026. The charges are not optional, they are not always disclosed at booking, and for a couple taking a two-week trip through multiple cities, they can add hundreds of dollars to a trip’s real cost.

The Cities That Changed Their Rules in 2026

Venice extended its day-tripper entry fee for 2026 to approximately 60 peak days between April 3 and July 26. Visitors entering the historic center between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. without an overnight reservation pay 5 euros per person if they register in advance or 10 euros per person on the day. The access fee system did not exist before 2024.

Edinburgh became the first city in the United Kingdom to impose a statutory visitor levy in 2026. Effective July 24, 2026, the levy adds 5 percent to the cost of accommodation, capped at five consecutive nights. A couple staying three nights at a 150-pound-per-night hotel pays an additional 22.50 pounds.

Amsterdam already charged the highest accommodation tax in Europe - 12.5 percent of the room rate. In 2026 it added a 15-euro-per-person day tax specifically for cruise passengers arriving by ship.

Barcelona layers a regional Catalonia tax on top of a city tax. For four-star hotels, travelers now pay up to 11 euros per person per night in combined charges.

Rome raised its tourist tax in 2026. Five-star hotels charge up to 10 euros per person per night.

What This Adds to a Typical Trip

A couple traveling to three European cities over ten days - Venice, Rome, and Edinburgh - staying in mid-range hotels can now reasonably budget an additional 100 to 180 euros in tourism taxes and fees. None of these charges typically appear in the rates shown by travel booking platforms at the search stage.

What to Do Before You Book

Search each destination you are visiting at the current year’s tourism tax rate. Ask your hotel or accommodation provider what taxes are included in the quoted rate and what will be added at checkout. For Venice day trips, register and pay the entry fee in advance at the city’s official portal to secure the lower 5-euro rate.
