Saint Luke's Says It Will Leave Aetna's Medicare Advantage Network Jan. 1

Saint Luke’s says its Kansas City-area patients with Aetna Medicare Advantage coverage will lose in-network access to the system’s doctors and facilities January 1, 2027. Keeping an affected insurance plan could mean finding another provider or obtaining a specific authorization for care outside its network.

The system’s October 22 patient guidance says the departure covers Saint Luke’s physicians, other providers and facilities. The notice concerns Medicare Advantage; Saint Luke’s says patients with Medicare supplement policies, including Aetna Medigap, are not affected by this change.

Local coverage has reported that Aetna remains willing to negotiate. Patients therefore need the current network position for their exact 2027 plan, rather than an assumption based on either this year’s insurance card or the possibility of a later agreement.

A contract dispute becomes a patient decision

Saint Luke’s attributes its decision to administrative burdens and payment issues that it says years of negotiations have not resolved. Those are the provider’s explanation for ending the relationship, rather than an independent finding about each disputed claim.

Its patient notice says care received after the change will generally be out of network, potentially carrying different coverage rules or higher patient costs. The system also says it generally will redirect affected patients to providers participating in their plans.

For someone with a regular specialist or a planned procedure, the practical question is therefore more specific than whether the insurance company still sells a policy. A plan can continue operating while a particular physician or hospital no longer participates.

Medicare’s fall enrollment window runs October 15 through December 7, with changes generally taking effect January 1. That gives members a chance to compare replacement coverage before the announced network departure.

Check your coverage before making a change

Start with the full plan name and identification number - not just the insurer’s name. Then check the 2027 network status of both the doctor and the facility where care is scheduled.

Ask the insurer and the provider’s office whether each participates in that 2027 plan. A directory entry or insurance card from 2026 cannot settle next year’s access.

Saint Luke’s says it will continue participating with other Medicare Advantage insurers, including Devoted Health, Humana and UnitedHealthcare. Verify the particular plan before making a switch.

Compare prescription coverage, pharmacies, expected premiums and service costs as well as the provider network. Preserving a doctor is valuable, but a replacement arrangement also has to cover the rest of a member’s care.

Ongoing treatment needs a separate answer

The provider identifies possible continuity-of-care exceptions for an active treatment plan, including cancer treatment, or specialized services available only through Saint Luke’s in the region. Aetna must approve the applicable authorization; an existing appointment by itself does not establish one.

Patients in treatment should ask what services, dates and providers an exception would cover, what they would owe and whether the approval is documented. That creates a usable answer for the next visit instead of a general assurance that someone will look into the problem.

For employer or former-employer Medicare arrangements, contact the benefits office before changing coverage. Saint Luke’s specifically encourages members with limited alternatives to ask their benefits leader whether another participating option can be offered.

Original Medicare requires its own comparison

Saint Luke’s says it will continue accepting Original Medicare and most Medigap policies. But returning to Original Medicare and buying a supplement are separate decisions; a doctor leaving a network does not automatically give a patient a guaranteed right to buy Medigap.

Check supplement eligibility, premiums, start dates and separate prescription coverage before changing plans. Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE and State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselors can help.

For an affected patient, the decision sequence is concrete: verify the exact plan, physician and facility; resolve any active-treatment authorization; compare the full replacement coverage; then confirm the effective date before changing the arrangement.
