Trump Creates Federal Super Intelligence Force for AI
Erin Calloway
Updated Oct 6, 2026
President Donald Trump has created a new federal artificial-intelligence task force and put national intelligence director Jay Clayton in charge of it. The group, called the Super Intelligence Force, has been given a 120-day mandate to assess advanced AI risks and opportunities and recommend how the government should respond.
The move places an intelligence official at the center of a technology issue that reaches well beyond national security. It also creates a single federal forum for questions involving AI competition, cyber threats, economic disruption and government coordination with private technology companies.
The Task Force Has a Deadline Rather Than an Open-Ended Mission
The 120-day reporting window gives the initiative a defined first milestone. Its work is expected to produce recommendations on policy and risk management rather than immediately impose new AI rules on companies or consumers.
National Security Is Only One Part of the Assignment
The administration has framed advanced AI as both a strategic advantage and a source of potential risk. The task force is expected to examine how government agencies should coordinate around those competing pressures while the technology develops rapidly.
Private AI Companies Remain Central to the Government’s Plan
The federal effort is being built alongside commitments and discussions involving major technology companies. That means the next phase will depend partly on how voluntary industry safeguards, federal recommendations and any later legislation fit together.
The First Test Comes When the 120-Day Review Is Delivered
For now, the concrete change is organizational: a named federal group, a named leader and a deadline. Whether that structure produces new regulation, legislation or agency action will depend on the recommendations that follow.
